NAPAC is a non-profit, non-partisans charitable organization, represents the public voices of more than fifty thousand Nepali Americans and another two hundred thousands Nepalis who are at different stages of being US citizens. The organization has been working to make the Nepali Americans involved in the mainstream public life at different levels and also to impact policy on issues of concern to the Nepali American community in the US. It has been involved in enhancing the participation of Nepali Americans in partnership with American citizens of different nationalities and friends of the Nepal and achieving social integration without losing cultural heritage. It has lobbied elected officials at different levels to promote the issues that are important to the Nepali American community. The organization was registered and incorporated in New York State in 2003 as pursuant to Section 402 of the Not-For Profit Corporation Law.
Why NAPAC?
In the early fifties and sixties, fewer Nepalis came to the US mainly for temporary stay as students and very few of them remained in USA. In the seventies, the trend of moving to the US on a permanent basis really started and by the end of seventies, there were a few thousand Nepalis and of whom a few hundred were US citizens. The number gradually started to increase in the eighties and by the end of the nineties there were about one hundred thousand Nepalis in the US out of which less than ten thousand were US citizens. In the 2000’s, with the advent of the Diversity visas, mass movement of Nepalis to escape the civil war and the coming of Bhutanese Nepalis, it has been estimated to have more than two hundred fifty thousand Nepalis currently in the USA. It is estimated that by 2020, the number will exceed more than half a million.
In the early stages, our interest was focused mainly on the public life of Nepalis and our interactions were also with Nepali politicians and public officials. As time went on and we faced different issues, we started to become interested in civil rights, discrimination, children education, health benefits and advocacy for financial aid for development to Nepal.
United States of America is a country with federal democracy. Public voice is very powerful and shapes its policies. It is very important to be involved at all levels of public life; town/village, county, state, national, professional organizations, trade unions and other civic organizations. NAPAC facilitates involvement of Nepali Americans at all levels of public life by organizing programs, teach in and introducing them to public leaders.
